Pentas Abadi
(Eternal Play)

Pentas Abadi (Eternal Play) celebrates the profound and enduring influence of Wayang on the Indonesian arts scene. The title “Pentas Abadi” translates to “Eternal Play”; a fitting homage to the timeless nature of Wayang. This exhibition explores how Wayang—an art form rooted in the first millennium—continues to resonate across various mediums and inspire contemporary artistic expression throughout Indonesia. Wayang, with its iconic shadow puppetry, has long been a central pillar of Indonesian cultural heritage. Its motifs and narratives have transcended traditional stage performances to adorn street walls and canvases, reflecting its deep-seated presence in the nation’s artistic landscape. Pentas Abadi highlights the seamless integration of Wayang into both visual and performing arts, demonstrating how this ancient tradition has evolved and adapted over centuries while remaining a vital force in Indonesian culture. Additionally, the exhibition delves into the philosophical and spiritual dimensions of Wayang through interactive installations and multimedia presentations, compiled by Arts Management students during an Overseas Immersion Programme to Surakarta and Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Visitors will gain insight into the symbolism and narratives that underpin Wayang performances, exploring how they reflect and shape societal values.
